AN EXQUISITE NAPOLEON III JEWELED AND HAND PAINTED PINK GROUND ENAMEL PURSE, THIRD QUARTER 19TH CENTURY,

of egg form and a hinged lid centering a circular foliate detailed gilt metal roundel, suspended from gilt chains and finger ring, framed by a faux turquoise, garnets and pearls embellished black line radiating star, above a continuous band of rural structures amidst towering trees and distant hills, enclosed by parcel gilt borders with faux jeweled black lozenges and rings trimmed in delicate scrolling lines, above sides with finely painted oval panels of a courting peasant youth attired in 18th century costume, arranging flowers in his maiden's hair, while seated beneath a shade tree amongst blossoming foliage before a distant romantic landscape, reversing to another panel with tall trees and old structures on the banks of a winding stream, each within a conforming parcel gilt and pearled frame, over a tapering base ending in a black enameled stylized star with gilt line and jeweled decoration. Height: 6 1/4" Diameter: 4 1/2"

Condition:

Good condition, some very faint crazing, a few tiny minor scratches, a miniscule surface chip on both of the oval painted panels but not in important areas, some surface buildup throughout and apparently unsigned. Amazingly, the enamel jewels are in good shape and have had negligible losses. This enamel piece is unusual and its good shape only heightens its intrinsic value.
